Jesus Demiguel, a 30-year-old striker for Tenerife in the Spanish Second Division, succumbed to his injuries after colliding with Andorra FC goalkeeper Jesus Ovorno during a league match on Monday and passed away the following morning.
On Thursday, Demiguel's funeral was held in his parents' hometown of Nava Hermosa, where football legends and fans came to bid him a sorrowful farewell.
His entire Tenerife team carried his coffin before the ceremony, and prominent figures such as Spanish national team coach Luis de la Fuente, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, and Atlético Madrid executive Gil Marin were all present to pay their respects. A minute's silence was also observed before each match in various European competitions this week.
At the funeral, agent Manuel Hernandez spoke on behalf of Demigué's family, expressing heartfelt gratitude for the support and care from the public: "Thank you for your love and remembrance. We feel the deep affection everyone has for Jesus, and see the mark he left in so many hearts; we will forever remember him."
"His passing has left an irreplaceable void, but it has also left the most precious memories for all those who were fortunate enough to be with him." The family also earnestly requested that the outside world respect their privacy and give them a peaceful space to express their grief.
Goalkeeper Ovorno, who was involved in the incident, could not hide his remorse and grief afterward. He spoke publicly through the club, saying: "I am going through the most difficult days of my life. Losing Jesus has caused me great pain. My heart is always with him, his family and everyone who loves him."
Outside the stadium, a large number of fans spontaneously gathered in front of Demiguel's portrait to offer flowers and candles, silently offering their final prayers for the player who died young.
